Europe and Unemployment: HUNGARY

The Hungarian unemployment rate was low between 1980-1989 because of the communist system, that provided a lot of workplaces.

From 1989 to 1993 the unemployment rate was 11%.

Between 1993 and 2001 it has been decrasing and from 2001 till now (2011) it is increasing again. Nowadays unemployment rate is about 11,4%.

In Hungary the unemployment rate is very high: it’s under the European average.

The education system is not connected to the labor market, so finding a job is very difficult for young people.

The most popular jobs in Hungary are: journalist, communication, economy and lawyer. Big companies ask for references from freshers but they do not give them a chance to get experiences.

That is why a lot of Hungarian youngsters find a job abroad, away below his or her activities. Even in Hungary they get jobs below their abilities.
